About the Derp Meme
A round head. A vacant grin. Two eyes looking in confidently different directions. Derp is the simplest face in the rage comic library, and that simplicity is the point. There are no complex emotions here. No layers. Just the flat, cheerful expression of a person who has done something extraordinarily dumb and has not yet realized it. The cross-eyed stare suggests the thought process (if you can call it that) is operating at reduced capacity.
"Derp" as an expression of stupidity dates back to the 1998 film BASEketball (Trey Parker and Matt Stone), but the rage comic face version solidified around 2009 on 4chan and Reddit. The simple, cross-eyed, vacantly smiling face became a stand-in character in rage comics for the person doing something dumb. "Derp" was also used as a placeholder name in comics, the way you might say "John Doe." The face and the word together created a universal shorthand for an absence of thought. - The top text should describe the dumb thing being done. The bottom is "DERP" or your own way of saying "there was no brain activity involved in this decision"
