What is the Doge Meme?

About the Doge Meme
Kabosu the Shiba Inu sits on a couch, turning her head slightly toward the camera with wide eyes and raised eyebrows. Her expression is simultaneously knowing, confused, and vaguely judgmental. Floating around her in Comic Sans are the fragmented thoughts of a dog trying very hard to form sentences: "much," "such," "very," "wow." The broken grammar is the entire point. She looks like she has something important to say but can only express it in two-word bursts of enthusiasm.
The original photo is of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu rescued by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato, who posted it to her blog in 2010. The internet added Comic Sans captions in broken English scattered around the dog's face: "such," "much," "very," "wow." By 2013 the format had taken over Tumblr and Reddit. In December 2013, the meme directly inspired the creation of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that reached a market cap in the billions. Kabosu passed away in May 2024 at age 18.
