Hi Reddit. Bill Gates here. I started reading obsessively as a kid in Seattle. It's genuinely one of the things that most shaped how I think. I believe almost every complex problem becomes more approachable when you read deeply about it. This sounds obvious. Most people don't actually do it. I post recommendations on Gates Notes. I try to pick things that are genuinely interesting, not just things that sound impressive to have read. I read novels, science, history, biography, and occasionally something so technical it gives me a headache. Those are usually the best ones. I'm happy to talk about books, about Microsoft's early days, about global health, or about why I think climate solutions are more tractable than people realize. Also: yes, I do take notes in the margins. Physical books. With a pen.
